This exhibition is the result of a three-month-long collaboration between young, emerging artists—mostly from Portugal but with many exceptions—and forced migrants, living across Europe.Part of its aim is to rehumanise these people. In the news media they are generally portrayed—perhaps inevitably—en masse. But each of these people is unique, each story is different and personal. For this reason each artwork is different; the one thing they all have in common is that they are all reflections on personal, as-yet-untold stories. The number of people who find themselves in this situation is staggering, which is part of the reason we chose to include so many pieces (over 70).
We hope that this gives at least some sense of the scale of this, without taking away from the importance of each individual story. There is no overarching, superimposed narrative to this exhibition. We don't want to tell people what to feel or think; we only hope that the work and the audience can be in dialogue with each other. While there are no doubt recurrent themes which run through the whole exhibition, we feel it is better not to expound on them here but to let you have your own, unaffected reactions to each artwork and draw your own conclusions and comparisons. We hope that viewers will be forced to rethink how they look at these people and this situation, just as each of these artists was. With all of this in mind, welcome.
