Sounds of Deptford
Sounds of Deptford is an ongoing, collaborative, research project paying tribute to the area through field recordings, interactions and photographs taken at various points along the high street. Through a series of visual and sonic anthologies, viewers are invited to experience the orchestra of the everyday which is Deptford High Street.
The project was conceptualized and began in 2019 by Raisa in an attempt to visually and sonically explore the topography of Deptford, and a way to examine her connection to the area as her “home-place”.

In more traditional anthropological discourse, home was considered a geographical location, specifically bounded by four walls, windows and a door: i.e. the domestic space of the house. In depictions of the home life of the 19th century a clear distinction could be seen between the "domestic" and the "urban": there was a clear distinction between "home life" and "city life".
In this work, home is defined as the space in which our actions take place. Our practices—which are what make a place home—take place both in the dwelling and in the shared public space.
Both places can equally be considered home. Domestic life is intertwined with city life and the practice of homemaking is a practice which moves beyond the domestic dwelling to incorporate the wider neighborhood and the city we inhabit.
In the first iteration of the project, the photographs and field recordings were exhibited at Deptford Lounge as part of Deptford X festival.
The soundscapes can be found here.
